VI Training Course in the Physics of

Correlated Electron Systems and High-Tc Superconductors

Vietri sul Mare (Salerno) Italy

8 - 19 October 2001

First Announcement: General Information

SCIENTIFIC BACKGROUND (AN INTRODUCTION):

Experimental and theoretical research in the physics of strongly correlated electron systems has been growing more and more in the last few years. The complexity of the problem of correlations in electronic systems makes the field intrinsically interdisciplinary, requiring an international coordination for the achievement of reliable results. The School, which is aimed at graduate and PostDoc researchers, will offer to the students the possibility to meet, in one setting, various experts from different physics contexts, all relevant to the investigation of strongly correlated electron systems. The proposed project of practical training courses intends to promote the theoretical research in the field of high correlated electron systems by putting together senior researchers with an outstanding experience and young researchers.

The course will be opened to a limited number (25) of young (aged under 35) researchers. The registration fee, which cannot be absolutely waived, will be $250 (€280). The staying expenses (accommodation and meals costs) will be of the order of $1000 (€1120). A limited number of grants to cover the staying expenses will be assigned, upon request, to accepted participants that do not have any other source of funding.

The young researchers will benefit from training in scientific techniques and various methodologies under the guidance of 4 highly qualified senior researchers:

Professor Piers Coleman

Dept of Physics and Astronomy

Rutgers University

Piscataway, NJ, USA

Professor Carlo Di Castro

Dipartimento di Fisica

Università degli Studi di Roma "La Sapienza"

Roma, Italy

Professor Peter Prelovsek

J. Stefan Institute

Department of Theoretical Physics

University of Ljubljana

Ljubljana, Slovenija

Professor Chandra M. Varma

Bell Laboratories

Lucent Technologies

Murray Hill, NJ, USA

TOPICS:

Professor Piers Coleman: Local moment physics: from heavy fermions to quantum criticality

Professor Carlo Di Castro: Symmetry properties, Ward identities and renormalization group for Fermi and Bose systems. Bose liquid. Luttinger liquid and high-Tc superconductivity.

Professor Peter Prelovsek: Transport in strongly correlated systems

Professor Chandra M. Varma: Singular Fermi-Liquids

A detailed bibliography related to the topics of the Training Course will be sent with second circular. This is to favor a background preparation for further discussion and operative research activity. The most relevant scientific results of the project should be the formation of young scientists by means of training through research; the establishment of European co-operation through transnational mobility; the integration in a common development line of several diversified researchers.

LOCATION:

Vietri (from Veteri, its ancient Roman name) sul Mare (on sea) is located within walking distance from Salerno and marks the beginning of the Amalfi Coast. It is situated five minutes by car from Salerno, one hour from the Naples Airport and three hours from the Rome Airport. Short rides take Positano, Sorrento, Herculaneum, Pompei, Paestum, Vesuvius or, by boat to the islands of Capri, Ischia, Procida.
